Review of WLMarketing’s Directory Submission Service (Part 1)

About a month or so ago I thought I would conduct an experiment to see if the directory submission service offered by WLMarketing would improve my page rank, traffic, or backlinks.

First of all, If you think I am going to give you a phony review with an affiliate link to WLMarketing you’re wrong. I’ll be honest, I would if I thought the service was of any real value but at this point I feel the $105 dollars I spent was a waste of money.

I signed up for the following package:

2000 Directory Submissions – 4 weeks Your website will be submitted to 500 directories per week for 4 weeks. Completion Time: ~ 1 Month(s)

After each round of submissions WLMarketing provided me with spreadsheets showing the name of the directory, the directory’s page rank, and the category my site was submitted to.

Page rank of the directories was as follows:

  • PR8 – 1
  • PR7 – 1
  • PR6 – 2
  • PR5 – 30
  • PR4 -80
  • PR3 -211
  • PR2 – 215
  • PR1 – 20

According to WLMarketing:

“There’s a long list of SEO firms claiming that they can do submission to directories, link building and article submission, but does a chocolate website really need to build links to an oil merchant directory?”

Hmmm…yes…good question, does  a chocolate website really need to build links to an oil merchant directory? Does a blog about online business and marketing really need links to “Free Adult Porn Blogs Directory?” That was one of the directories my site was submitted to.

Not at all what WLMarketing claims “Our submission services ensure that each manual directory, we submit to is relevant to your site.”

Wow, thankfully that submission was rejected – keep me out of the bad neighborhoods!

WLMarketing setup a gmail account where I could see which submissions have been accepted and which have been rejected. Since there were something like 900 emails I didn’t go through them all, but from the looks of things probably 100 or so have been accepted.

About 300 of the emails I got back look like they all came from the same place or same network of crappy spammy directories.

I will add part 2 to this report later but as it stands now I have experienced no change in page rank nor have I recieved any backlinks that I can verify.

For instance, I can enter the search operator “link:www.mysitesurl.com” in the Google toolbar to check the backlinks to my site to reveal no links back to my site. The same thing happens when I cross reference MSN using “linkfromdomain:url.com.”

At this point I am thinking I probably would have been better off taking that $100 bucks and putting it towards a Yahoo or Business.com directory submission.

There are definitely mixed reviews of the value of directory submissions. A really good article on the Wisdom and Folly of Directory Link Building Can be found over at the SEOmoz site.

I would love to hear others experience with these services. Don’t be shy, leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Hi Paul, it’s a three part series. Did you read them all? Anyhow, yes…the service was beneficial to some extent and resulted in nearly 4000 backlinks from various directories.

My homepage is now PR1 I don’t know if that is directly related to the WL marketing effort but I believe that played a part in it. I noticed the PR change after a linkback from BlogTalkRadio.

I have used WL Marketing for a large SEO Package to include Article Submisson, Press Release, Directory Submission, Keyword Review, Local Submission, and Social Bookmarking. I have found WL Markting to be very responsive to all of my questions. However, one problem that I had was I requested their phone number and I was told the following: I’m afraid we don’t currently offer phone support, but if you have a specific question or need input on something, I’ll be happy to help out :). Another issue I had was regarding the purchase of Local submissions and I received was no local submissions at all aside from Google and Yahoo. I through local submissions concentrated on your general area?? I will let you know about the other services. With the exception of local submissions, I am currently under Keyword review. I will keep you posted on the progress of my personal experience. Keywords have currently been in review since Monday evening, today is Thursday morning. Hopefully, I have a better experience with links staying on sites much longer.

I have used WL marketing extensively with good results. Their directory submissions have worked well for me with inner pages that had 0 Pr going up within days to PR 1 with just 30 accepted directory links.
They are very helpful and responsive to questions and I have had some good quality articles written by them.
