How to Get What You Want in Five Easy Steps

1973297621_b09b65c11f1

If you are going to be an entrepreneur or solopreneur you’ve got to be a leader.  You are captain at the helm and unless you steer your ship nobody will steer it for you.

I see people buying course after course, waiting for one of those courses to have some magic formula that propels them toward instant success. It just doesn’t work that way, and the more I have thought about why people fail in their businesses or fail to make the most from courses they buy the more I think it boils down leadership, initiative, and execution.

Pardon me if I bungle my way through this post. I should have worked out this philosophy more before I sat down here. It just occurred to me that there is a common denominator among the people I encounter who want things but never end up getting the things they want.  The problem has something to do with being a leader.

Listen, if you are one of those people buying courses and personal development books and never really getting from them what you hoped, here’s the deal. You have to figure out what the next most logical step is. You have to quit waiting for someone else to chart your course to success. You are the one who must sit down and flesh out the details of your step-by-step plan.  You have to take initiative and be willing to make mistakes. You will get things wrong but that is all part of the process.

Look, here’s the deal. This stuff never changes, the fundamentals are ALWAYS the same. Let’s go back and touch on the fundamentals here in a very elementary way for a minute. And…if you are struggling or unmotivated or whatever just go through this process to get yourself back on track.

  1. What is your vision? What is your ultimate goal? This is about as basic as it gets. Let’s frame it in an everyday situation. Okay, say you want to go to Paris. See, it starts with a simple idea. This can always change later, but you need a target.
  2. Okay, now that we know exactly what we want to do…go to Paris, the next thing we do is plan all the little details to get there. This is the process of problem solving and answering questions. How much money do we need? Should we fly or travel by ship? Who will go with us? Which airline/ Cruise ship? What will we do once we get there? Etc…
  3. Great, now that we have the plan we simply take the first step, second step, third step…you get the idea. Sometimes, we will encounter barriers to completing the steps. So…what do we do then? The next most logical thing. For instance, say we have been saving to go to Paris when an unexpected emergency wipes out most of our savings. What do we do then? Simple, adjust accordingly and begin the process of asking questions, figuring out our options, and resuming the necessary steps to get to our end goal.
  4. Measurement - Throughout this process we set measurable goals or benchmarks for ourselves. If the goal was to save $5000 in three months to get to Paris and then we fall short of that goal, it isn’t the end of the world. It is an opportunity for the next item on our list.
  5. Improvement - Now that we have benchmarks and goals to meet we can move on to improving things. We can do this by keeping a log of our various successes and failures. We can then review the log and make the neccessary adjustments to improve our results next time until the point at which they become satisfactory to us.

Wasn’t that simple? Well, that is just how things are done, all the time. If you were looking for the magic formula, this is it. This is the same formula that sent men into space and submarines to the bottom of the sea.

Have something you want to say? Why not help someone out and be proactive by adding your opinion and leaving a comment. Until the next post…have a great day.

Hey man, you’re so right at how simple it can be and it all starts with a crystal clear vision on where you want to go. If everything that a person is, mind, body and spirit is going in the direction of that vision, it has to happen for them.

Of course there are so many steps along the way but if you are doing what you truly love, then all of those steps will reveal themselves at the right time and they will feel effortless.

YOu mentioned the steps, and I agree with what you wrote. It’s not very hard at all

    Thanks for the comment Mike.

Yeah, there are a lot of steps but I guess it’s kind of like math. We are only ever dealing with only two numbers at a time.

Our path towards meeting our goals is something similar. We are really only dealing with the step we just took and the step we are about to take.

I just checked your blog. It looks interesting. I haven’t had a chance to mucky around in it much yet but I am looking forward to checking it out.

    Best, Doug
