Family and Friends Make the Worst Hired Help

bad_employee1

I am sorry, but I just have to rant. I have hired so many friends and family members over the past couple of years only to be let down in every single circumstance.

My advice, don’t hire friends or family. My situation may not be applicable to everyone. I have heard many cases where people work peaceably and prosperously with family and friends all the time. This has not been my experience.

I remember a few years back I hired a friend to create five microsites for me. I offered to pay him above market rates, what happenend? Nothing…he never finished the task.

My son started attending college this year. He has yet to find a job. I have offered him numerous opportunities including the last one to create simple profiles for $1 dollar each that take no more than a few minutes to create.

Even if he took 5 minutes to create a profile he could do 12 in an hour. Not bad eh? What high scho0l kid with no experience makes $12 dollars an hour? How many profiles has he created? None.

A friend of mine is a healthy 66 year old. He can do pushups on his finger tips with his hands stretched in front or to the side and ride his bike 100 miles no problem.

He is also on social security and needed to earn some extra cash. I offered him the simple task of putting flyers underneath windshield wipers for $8 dollars an hour and $35 dollars for every sale that came from a flyer. What happened? Nothing. He had a hundred excuses as to why he couldn’t get the task done. What gives?

My business partner is another story. Here is a person who owns a 15% share in all of my business activities.

It’s like pulling teeth to get the business partner of which I am referring to take any initiative whatsoever. I am just dumbfounded by this.

Another one, here is a friend, an unemployed union carpenter who had been unemployed to the point that his unemployment was about to run out. I offered him several opportunities to learn something new and also earn a few hundred per day. He did the work for about a day, and then made up some excuse about how it was hard and quit.

What are your thoughts? I would love to hear from anyone else who has hired friends and family. Leave a comment and share your experiences.
